SHOKOSAI I (Hayakawa Shokosai I), 1815 - 1897

Hayakawa Shokosai I was the first bamboo artist in the modern era to sign his work, This hat, the only known example outside the Lloyd Cotsen collection at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, dates from the Meiji era. It retains its original band and patterned sweat-band within.
