Original paintings by Richard Sharpe Shaver (1907 - 1975)
The acme of Shaver's creative/psychotic enterprise qualifies him as one of the Twentieth century's greatest "outsider" artists. Originally based upon imagery he perceived in his "picture rocks", and later manifested on rough masonite by "the same forces" that had imprinted the rocks with pictures "from days of yore", Shaver made a large number of remarkable paintings. In 1975, Ray Palmer published many of Shaver's paintings and rock photos in a hardcover book, The Secret World.
Taken together, Shaver's paintings, photographs, and hand-made books constitute a body of art of exquisite strangeness and compelling visual power. Shaver's art has recently been discussed in How to Look at Outsider Art, by Lyle Rexer, Harry N. Abrams Publishers 2005, New York. The remarkable web-site called Shavertron created by photographer Richard Toronto, is the greatest resource for information on Richard S. Shaver.
