The club, at 334 East 79th Street, was a branch of the powerful Democratic patronage mill run out of Tammany Hall, and its handsome design was symbolic of the clout of local Irish-American politicians. The Cherokee Club, the Democratic organization of the Twenty-second Assembly District of New-York. The Cherokee Club was demolished after an effort to make it a New York City landmark failed in 1976. But its influence is still evident in the neighborhood: along with Cherokee Place, there is the local Cherokee Post Office and the landmark Cherokee apartments on East 77th Street.</image:caption>
